Sandcastles construction begins!

PCHF has revealed the name of Western Australia’s first children’s hospice: Sandcastles (Boodja Mia).
Construction on WA’s first children’s hospice, Sandcastles (Boodja Mia) has now officially begun, with the state-of-the-art facility anticipated to open in late 2025.
An ode to the therapeutic healing properties of the sun, sea, sand, and ocean breeze; Sandcastles is inspired by the natural surrounds of the children’s hospice.
Dual naming was developed by Noongar cultural advisors, Soft Earth, with Sandcastles directly translating to Boodja Mia in traditional Noongar language.
PCHF Chairman the Hon. Ian Campbell said: “It’s a proud day in Western Australia’s history as we officially begin construction on the state’s first-ever children’s hospice.”
“A nostalgic nod to days spent on the beach with family and friends, Sandcastles will become a comfortable ‘home away from home’ space to help kids create cherished memories with family and friends. We are eternally grateful to our generous donors and supporters, including the WA public, without whom we would not be standing here today.”
Sandcastles is made possible thanks to generous contributions from Cancer Council WA (via a generous bequest from the late John Street), the State and Federal Governments, Lotterywest and the WA community, Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, and Minderoo Foundation, as well as HFW Australia, Hassell and Hesperia.
Upon completion, Sandcastles will be a ‘home away from home’ built close to Swanbourne Beach and nature, featuring seven single-guest bedrooms, three family suites and a bereavement suite.
Premier Hon. Roger Cook said: “My Government is proud to be supporting the first and only purpose-built facility providing respite and palliative care for Western Australian children. Boodja Mia will support WA families going through what is the most challenging journey.”
WA property developer, Hesperia has been engaged to deliver the project on behalf of PCHF, with negotiations underway to select a managing contractor. Main works are expected to commence in April 2024, following initial enabling works.
The ongoing clinical operational costs of Sandcastles will be covered by facility partner, the Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS).
