MACA’s support secures two new Ultrasounds

Thanks to our wonderful Miracle Supporter, MACA, PMH Foundation has been able to purchase two new ultrasounds for the Department of Anaesthesia at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Ultrasound machines are used by the Department of Anaesthesia at Princess Margaret Hospital to allow for real-time imaging of nerves of children when they are undergoing medical procedures.

Using ultrasound allows the spread of the anaesthetic to be visualised and assessed to ensure that it is precisely and directly delivered. This enables lower doses of anaesthetic to be used, which is particularly beneficial for very small children and babies as it helps to reduce side effects and increases post-operative comfort levels.

As well as providing higher quality images, the new ultrasound machines have the added benefit of greater portability which allows them to be moved throughout the hospital, thereby increasing the areas where they can be used.

Currently, the hospital is limited to using fixed ultrasound machines which reduces theatre efficiency and can lead to prolonged anaesthesia until a machine becomes available; or the use of an alternative technique which does not provide the added benefits of ultrasound.

PMH Foundation would like to thank MACA for its incredible support in funding new technologies for the hospital.
