Funding vital COVID-19 research for WA kids
Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation is excited to announce funding for two Perth Children’s Hospital research projects to improve knowledge of the rate and prevalence of COVID-19 in WA children.
Data from this research will help to identify unrecognised community transmission of coronavirus among asymptomatic children. This will be critical in ensuring the best level of care for children and their families.
“We need to know where we are right now, to map out where we should go next. This research will give us the information we need to better understand COVID-19 infection for children in WA. A sero-survey is one of the tools in the kit for a public health response. With the focus on adult illness and deaths, it is important that paediatricians continue to advocate for world class research that helps understand the disease for children as well.” – A/Prof Christopher Blyth, Head of Department, Paediatric Infectious Diseases.
The findings of this research will also guide a safe and efficient way to re-commence elective surgery for children in the COVID-19 era in order to address life-limiting ENT issues, as well as enable appropriate medical care for viral infection for asymptomatic children who are diagnosed with coronavirus.
